STUDENT SPACE · TOPIC 2

Reactions with water and acids

Predict metal reactions and write balanced equations.

The essentials

  • Many metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides. Burning magnesium forms white magnesium oxide.
  • Potassium and sodium react vigorously with cold water. Calcium reacts less vigorously.
  • Magnesium reacts very slowly with cold water. Heated magnesium reacts with steam.

Key vocabulary

EnglishChinese
steam水蒸气
effervescence冒气泡
dilute acid稀酸

Quick practice

Try each question before opening its hint or answer. Use paper for calculations and diagrams.

Question 1

Name the solid product when magnesium reacts with steam.

Need a hint for Question 1?

Identify the reagent: oxygen, cold water, steam or dilute acid.

Check Question 1

Magnesium oxide, MgO.

Question 2

Write a balanced equation for calcium reacting with cold water.

Need a hint for Question 2?

A metal with cold water gives hydroxide and hydrogen.

Check Question 2

Ca + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + H₂

Question 3

Predict the result of adding copper to dilute hydrochloric acid. Explain.

Need a hint for Question 3?

Locate copper relative to hydrogen.

Check Question 3

No reaction producing hydrogen. Copper is below hydrogen in the reactivity series.

Use Lesson 2 in your worksheet for written practice. Your teacher will discuss those answers in class.
