STUDENT SPACE · TOPIC 1

Metal properties and uses

Link metal and alloy properties to their uses.

The essentials

  • Metals usually conduct heat and electricity, are malleable and ductile, and have high melting and boiling points.
  • Copper suits electrical wiring because it conducts electricity well and is ductile.
  • Low density makes aluminium useful in aircraft. Aircraft commonly use aluminium alloys for added strength.

Key vocabulary

malleable可锻的
ductile可延展的
alloy合金

Quick practice

Try each question before opening its hint or answer. Use paper for calculations and diagrams.

Question 1

Name the two metals in brass.

Need a hint for Question 1?

Identify what the object must do or withstand.

Check Question 1

Copper and zinc.

Question 2

Explain why copper is suitable for electrical wiring using two properties.

Need a hint for Question 2?

Link current flow and the ability to form a wire to properties.

Check Question 2

Copper has good electrical conductivity and is ductile, so it can be drawn into wires.

Question 3

Explain why an alloy can be harder than a pure metal in terms of its structure.

Need a hint for Question 3?

Consider atom sizes and whether layers slide easily.

Check Question 3

Different-sized atoms distort the regular layers. The layers cannot slide over one another as easily.

Use Lesson 1 in your worksheet for written practice. Your teacher will discuss those answers in class.
