STUDENT SPACE · TOPIC 3
Oxides and solubility
Classify oxides and apply salt solubility rules.
The essentials
- Metal oxides such as CuO and CaO act as bases and neutralise acids.
- CO₂ and SO₂ are acidic oxides. Al₂O₃ and ZnO are amphoteric.
- All sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble. All nitrates are soluble.
Key vocabulary
| English | Chinese |
|---|
| basic oxide | 碱性氧化物 |
| acidic oxide | 酸性氧化物 |
| amphoteric | 两性 |
| precipitate | 沉淀 |
Quick practice
Try each question before opening its hint or answer. Use paper for calculations and diagrams.
Question 1
Why cannot “all metal oxides are basic” be a complete classification?
Need a hint for Question 1?
Apply all-soluble ion rules before the exceptions for a salt family.
Check Question 1
Some metal oxides, including Al₂O₃ and ZnO, are amphoteric.
Question 2
Give two amphoteric oxides.
Need a hint for Question 2?
Think of oxides that react with both acids and bases.
Check Question 2
Al₂O₃ and ZnO.
Question 3
Predict solubility of NaNO₃, BaSO₄ and MgCO₃. Give a reason for each.
Need a hint for Question 3?
Use the nitrate rule, sulfate exceptions and carbonate rule.
Check Question 3
NaNO₃: soluble, nitrate/sodium salt. BaSO₄: insoluble sulfate exception. MgCO₃: insoluble carbonate.
Use Lesson 3 in your worksheet for written practice. Your teacher will discuss those answers in class.
